Domain names and DNS zones: understand the settings
Separate your project address, its hosting and the records used for email.
Domains and hosting have different roles
A domain name is the address visitors remember. Hosting stores your website or application. Buying a domain alone does not create a website or email mailboxes.
When choosing an extension, compare initial pricing, renewal pricing and included services. Availability must be checked for the exact name you want to register.
Common record types
An A record connects a name to an IPv4 address; AAAA does the same for IPv6. CNAME creates an alias to another name. MX identifies the servers receiving email for the domain, while TXT can publish verification information or email-related policies.
Use the values supplied by your hosting or email provider. Incorrect settings can stop a website or email from working. Keep a copy of existing records before changing them.
DNS does not replace an email service
MX records route incoming messages; they do not create mailboxes. A separate email service or MX Plan must be activated when that option is available.
DNS caches can retain previous values for some time. After changing a record, check your website and email without repeatedly modifying settings. Available management features depend on the domain and connected provider.
